When you are shopping for a CD rack, there are many things to consider. While there are dozens of different styles and sizes to choose from, it's important to find the type that best fits your storage and organizational needs.

One of the things to consider is the number of CDs that you wish to organize in your CD rack. If you have a very large collection, it can be difficult to find one single rack that can hold your entire collection. When faced with this dilemma, you have a few options. First, you may choose to utilize several racks, possibly bookcase style racks, to maximize your storage space, and use them side by side. This can provide a great deal of disk storage area, but it also generally takes up quite a bit of wall space in your home in the process. Other options for large collections might include storing portions of your collection in different areas of your home.

If you have a smaller collection, it should be easier to find one CD rack that can store all of your disks. When choosing your rack, one other thing that you should consider before purchasing is where you plan to put the rack in your home. Not only will this decision help determine the size and shape of the rack, but it will also help determine the style and color. If you wish to store your CD collection in a formally decorated room, for example, you might be looking for a fine wood rack. However, if your media room is decorated in a very modern style, a sleek CD rack might be a better design choice.

After you've chosen your CD rack, it will likely need to be assembled. Assemble your rack carefully, by following the instructions, using the proper tools. You want your rack to be sturdy, and the thought of your rack collapsing while it contains your entire CD collection is not a pleasant one.

When choosing a location in your home, you want to choose a room that provides a good environment for your CDs. CDs can be best protected from damage in a location that is not in direct sunlight, or too close to a heating source. You also want to choose a location that doesn't get too hot or too humid. These types of extreme conditions can degrade your CDs over time, and should be avoided. By locating your CD rack in a cool, dry spot, out of direct sunlight, you will be helping to protect your valuable collection.

Another important thing to consider when choosing a location in your home for your CD rack is convenience. Music is something that is meant to be enjoyed, so you want to make it convenient to access and locate the CDs. Putting a rack in an out of the way location might seem to make sense from a space-savings aspect, but if it is difficult to get to the rack, or if it's in a spot that makes it difficult to read the titles and select your CDs, you will find that you may not listen to your music as much as you would like to. Choosing a location in a comfortable room where you enjoy sitting to listen to music, in a spot that provides easy access to view and select the CDs is generally a good choice.

If you have small children in the house, you might want to consider choosing a rack that you can mount on the wall, or at least keep it high enough up so that small hands cannot reach your CDs. A stack of CDs is often irresistible to small children, and it doesn't take long for a child to take a lot of CDs not only out of the rack, but also out of their plastic jewel cases. To avoid possible damage to your collection, as well as wasted time reorganizing your CDs, it's best to remove the temptation from small children.

How to Build a CD Rack

Another option when choosing a CD rack is using a number of smaller racks, instead of one large one. In fact, even if you do have one large rack, you might find it convenient to also utilize one or more smaller racks. This can be especially handy to keep a small collection of favorite CDs close at hand in other locations where you like to listen to music, such as in your office or on a stand by your bed. By doing this, you are able to keep small collections organized neatly and safely, and reduce the chance of possible damage to your CDs by having a stack of CDs just laying on your desktop or nightstand, where they could be easily damaged.

By choosing a CD rack that best suits your storage needs and music listening habits, you will not only stay better organized, but also tend to enjoy your collection even more.
