Sheet Metal Tools
82Fabrication is the process of shaping and bending of sheet metal. Sheet metals can be molded into different shapes like hollow shapes, square shapes, etc. and the tools used for these processes range from hand tools to power-operated tools. Sheet metals shaping work normally starts with the basic operations like cutting, perforating, etc.
When it comes to shaping operation of sheet metals like deep drawing the tool called roller is used. Deep drawing process is used for making kitchen sinks, automotive fuel tanks, aluminum cans, etc. Deep drawing process is done with the help of tool called rollers. Rollers bend the sheet into desired angle. With the help of the rollers the sheet metal is rolled in both directions to attain a uniform structure.
Perforation process refers to the puncturing of the sheet metal to creating a hole. This process helps in making hole in the sheet metal of desired sizes for this purpose different tools are used depending on the size of the hole. The tools using for perforation are needles and pins, punch and die and laser perforation. Needles and pin perforation are further divided into hot needle perforation and cold needle perforation. Hot needle perforation softens the sheet metal being perforated and makes a ring around the hole. This method of perforation is used in many industries since the ring supports in keeping the integrity of the material being perforated. Cold needle perforation cause a cone shaped structure in the sheet metal. Punch and die tools are used for perforating thick sheet metals or sheet metals that require gauge holes. Laser perforation methods use laser lights for puncturing the sheet metal.
Spinning of sheet metals is a process by which the sheet metal is turned around at a high-speed and converted into an axially symmetric part. Spinning process will be of great use in making satellite dishes, missile nose cones and rocket motor casings from sheet metals. Different tools are used in the process of spinning of sheet metal. The fundamental tool for spinning is called a spoon.
Another widely used process in the formation of sheet metal is bending. For this purpose a tool called Press brake is used. In this machine, the bottom portion of the matching contains a V-shaped groove and this is called the die, the top portion of the machine contains a punch, which presses the sheet into the V-shape die in the bottom portion and makes the sheet metal bend. So the sheet metal is placed between the top and bottom portion of the press brake to bend it into V-shape.
Roll forming is another process involved in the process of formation of sheet metal. Roll forming is a non-stop bending operation where a long strip of sheet metal is passed through successive sets of rolls to get the desired cross-section profile. Roll forming machines would be best suitable for producing sheet metal parts with long length.
Rolling is a formulation process, in which the sheet metal is passed through a pair of rolls. The types of rolling process are profile rolling and flat rolling. Stamping is a sheet metal formation process which includes punching with the help of tools like stamping press or machine press. This tool is used for making some designs in the sheet metal for decorative purposes. In the process of sheet metal forming ironing is the process of identically thinning the sheet metal. This process is helpful in producing sheet metals having uniform thickness. Wheeling is the process of rotating or revolving the sheet metal to form a cylindrical shape. Incremental sheet forming or ISF is a method where a metal sheet is formed by a sequence of incremental deformations. De cambering is a process of removing horizontal bend or it can also be referred as a leveling process; this process straightens the sheet metals edges.Fasteners such as rivets and sheet metal screws are used for connecting different pieces of sheet metals. They are used for temporarily connecting the multiple sheet metals before the pieces are permanently joined together. Rivets are metal pin or bold inserted through holes in the sheet metals to be joined and then hammered. Sheet metals screws are cylindrical shaft with one or more spiral threads as a worm screw or a lead screw.
Different metals like Stainless steel and aluminum are made into sheet metal. Even gold and silver are converted into sheet metal for decorative purposes. Stainless Sheet metals are used for roofing purposes. The three most common stainless steel grade sheet metals are 304, 316 and 410. All these sheet-metals act as a good corrosion resistant. Grade 316 stainless steel sheet metal is used for valves, chemical equipment, valves and for marine applications. As compared to other two grades, grade 410 is less resistant to corrosion and so it is used in cutlery industry.
So, there are different sheet metal tools available, but these tools should be used only after acquiring good training because a person using these tools without experience may get some injuries.

Great overview of the tools here. Tooling metal is such an art form. Great hub!
